History of Lehman Trikes
As a project to enhance family closeness, John and a few friends build the first Lehman trike for John's wife Linda. In John's home garage they fashion a 7.5' Chevrolet Vega differential and a metal body onto a 1981 Honda CB900 Custom. Linda does not get very far down the road before John trades the trike for a bike for himself, leaving Linda ride-less once again.
To replace Linda's first trike, a second Lehman Trike was built using a 1984 Honda GL1200 Gold Wing. Originally constructed with a wooden body, it is later modified to the first fiberglass shell. Only a few hundred miles are placed on this machine before it is sold. This rapid turnover predicts the beginning of a unique enterprise.
Lehman Industries is started. The primary work is fiberglass parts including canoes, truck sleepers, and windshield visors.
Lehman Industries constructs their first shop on John and Linda's acreage north of Westlock. The premises are 2,880 sq. ft. and employs three staff members (John & Linda Lehman, and Alivin Stauffer).
The first fiberglass body is manufactured for Honda GL1100 & GL1200 Gold Wings. It is nicknamed the "ice cream box" because of its square appearance.
The first Honda GL1500 Gold Wing is converted for Darquise Hoffman of British Columbia, Canada. It features a strap-iron external swing arm with passenger floorboards mounted directly to the swing arm. This design became known as the first generation swing arm. Although Lehman Industries manufactured the undercarriage for this trike, the fiberglass body was custom-made elsewhere.
Lehman Industries debuts the Tour body for Honda GL1500 Gold Wings. The design has flattop fenders with a small rear trunk. Onl 30 trikes were constructed with this design.
John and Linda Lehman attend the Black Hills Classic in Sturgis, SD for the first time. Here, a converted GL1200 Gold Wing trike takes first place at the Rat's Hole Custom Chopper Show.
The first conversion on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is completed. It consists of a prototype Sport body on a 1980 FXWG. This first generation swing arm design is used until 1999.
The Sport body is formally introduced. It is available for Harley-Davidson FX models.
Larry Strilchuk partners with John Lehman. With the formation of the new partnership, Lehman Industries becomes Lehman Trikes, Inc.
A second facility is leased within the town of Westlock. It adds an additional 2,500 sq. ft. of production space. Lehman Trikes now has 11 employees.
The Tour body for Honda GL1100 Gold Wings is re-designed. It now features a larger rear trunk with top trunk mounted directly above.
Lehman Trikes moves the remainder of its operation from John and Linda's acreage to a 30,000 sq. ft. location in Westlock.
Lehman Trikes presents the GT body for Honda GL1500 Gold Wing. This is the first Gold Wing trike to incorporate the factory taillights into the rear of the body. The new body drastically increases trunk volume and the drop-down door allows for easier access to the storage area.
Lehman Trikes strays from their conventional philosophy to produce a new concept trike. It is a Sport Tour model for the BMW R1100RT.
Filling the need for an introductory trike, Lehman Trikes completes their first Suzuki conversion. The Sport conversion is manufactured for the Suzuki VS800 Intruder.
The Honda Valkyrie becomes the latest in a long line of Honda motorcycles to be fitted with the Sport Conversion.
The Lehman Trikes warehouse is moved to an additional 7,600 sq. ft. facility.Back to top
Lehman Trikes celebrates its 15th anniversary with the introduction of Lehman Pride, the Lehman Trikes owners group. The first annual Pride Ride does a figure eight pattern of the United States covering a distance of 10,000 miles in 45 days.
Lehman Trikes completes its initial public offering and begins trading on the Canadian Venture Exchange.
Late December 2003 marked the expansion of the company physically into the U.S.A. The Spearfish, SD Assembly Plant opened its doors in January 2004, operating through subsidiary company Lehman Trikes USA, Inc.
At the request of Polaris Industries, Lehman Trikes develops concept trikes for the Victory Vegas and Kingpin. The concepts are first displayed in July at Polaris' 50th Anniversary Celebration in Minneapolis, MN.
On the new fuel-injected Suzuki Boulevard C50 platform, the Tramp was born and released alongside the Monarch II in August at Sturgis Rally. The redesigned body highlights include passenger floorboards, and a 2.2 cu. ft. trunk. It continues to be available exclusively as a factory assembled trike.
Completing the lineup of New Product unveiling at Sturgis Rally is the Raider. Integrating the Cushion-ride suspension in a newly designed customer-inspired package, the Raider also completes the Lehman line of conversions by offering a trunk for storage. The Raider is initially offered as a factory conversion only.
First appearing on the scene at Sturgis Rally, the Jackall harnesses 90 cubic inches of power on a Suzuki platform. Big brother to the Tramp, the Jackal suitably carries a full-capacity trunk and touring capabilities comparable to Lehman's other touring models. Available as a factory complete trike only.
Victory Motorcycles signs agreement for the development, manufacture, and sale of Lehman-branded vehicles.
Lehman enters a supply agreement with Harley-Davidson for components, paint, and conversion services in the manufacture of the Tri-Glide.
John Lehman is deservedly inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum; Hall of Fame for his contribution of the modern trike to the motorcycle industry.
Lehman PitBoss awarded V-Twin "Motorcycle Design of the Year". The Kawasaki "Concept Trike" is revealed at the Kawasaki Dealer Meeting.
The Storm for the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 is released. Lehman Trikes hosts the first-ever "All Trike Ride" during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
John Lehman tragically passes away January 5th. Unrelated to John's passing, Lehman Trikes is purchased by Craig Arrojo of Champion Investments Inc. of California and becomes Lehman Trikes USA.
Lehman Trikes introduces two new models featuring independent suspension, the "Renegade LLS" for Harley-Davidson FLH & FLT models and the "Monarch II LLS" for Honda GL1800 and the new Honda F6B models.
Lehman introduces the "Trinity LLS" for Harley-Davidson FLH & FLT models.
